Derby Racecourse

Fairview is a famous racing venue for thoroughbred horse racing in Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. Established in 1946 and raced twice a year, it is considered one of Johannesburg’s finest racecourses. Often referred to as ‘The Pride of Johannesburg’, Fairview encompasses over 1200 acres. Horse racing is a big deal in South Africa. Just ask Mike De Kock. In any given year, there are more than 2,000 horse races taking place in some 200 locations across 10 provinces. In Durban, where July 8 marked the opening day of Royal Ascot and Melbourne Cup week, we recently asked veteran bloodstock agent De Kock to share some insight on fairview horse racing tips. Here’s what he had to say… It was so long ago that I can’t remember it all, but as far as my recollection goes I went down to Fairview at about age six or seven with my grandfather who was interested in buying horses for breeding purposes. My first real experience was when I went down with my father who wanted to buy horses for his own racing stable. We ended up with two yearlings which we trained up over summer and ran at Greyville’s Autumn meeting – they won both their starts including one over 1m 4f (1 mile 4 furlongs) before going off to Australia as stallions!

East London Races

Fairview Raceway is a prominent thoroughbred horse racing track in East London, Eastern Cape, located around 20 km south of King William’s Town. The facility includes an 800 m right-handed turf racecourse with 12 home straight and a 1200 m right-handed all-weather racecourse. Both tracks are equipped with lighting facilities and floodlights. In 2001, Fairview raceway was awarded The Small Venue of the Year title by Tracks Magazine USA. Currently, there are three major races run at Fairview Racecourse in East London, namely The Springbok Mile (Grade 1), The Fairview Mile (Grade 2) and The Free State Stakes (Grade 3). These races are run over distances of 1000m, 900m and 1600m respectively.
The Springbok Mile is considered to be one of the most important races on South Africa’s turf calendar as it offers a purse worth R1 million to its winner. This prestigious event attracts top horses from across South Africa as well as from other countries such as Australia, New Zealand and Zimbabwe.
The first-ever running of The Springbok Mile took place in 1986 when it was won by legendary galloper Only For Life who went on to win six Group One events during his career including two editions of The Durban July Handicap.

Maputo City Races

The Maputo city races are a great way to enjoy a day of horse racing while at one of more than 200 licensed racing clubs throughout South Africa. The Maputo City Races take place each year in September when racers from across southern Africa come together to compete on three different race tracks: one for harness racing and two for thoroughbreds. For those unfamiliar with horse racing, here’s how it works. Each race features several horses competing against each other by running around a track marked by white-and-orange barriers or wooden fences that jockeys must jump over or otherwise navigate around if their horse should fall behind during a race.

Greyville Racecourse (Natal)

The Greyville Racecourse is located in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It has a seating capacity of 15,000 people and was built back in 1892.
